Does Your Piano Have One of These Problems?

Player pianos are complex pneumatic instruments. Here are the most common issues we diagnose and repair throughout North Georgia.

01

No Suction — Piano Won't Play at All

The main pump bellows have cracked or the cloth has hardened with age. Without vacuum the entire player system is dead. Diagnosable on a single visit.

02

Notes Stick On or Won't Play

Individual pneumatic pouches have dried and no longer seal. Certain notes play continuously without stopping, or don't respond at all — classic signs of pouch failure.

03

Weak, Uneven, or Soft Playing

Air leaks in the leather or rubber tubing rob the system of pressure. Notes play too softly or unevenly across the keyboard, often worse in humid weather.

04

Roll Won't Advance or Rewind

The roll motor or transmission mechanism has failed — often a deteriorated drive band or worn rubber. Very common in pianos that haven't been played in years.

05

Tracker Bar Blockage

Dust, debris, or corrosion blocks the tiny holes in the tracker bar, causing missed or doubled notes as the roll passes over. Often overlooked but easy to fix.

06

Cracked or Rotted Rubber Tubing

The rubber tubes connecting tracker bar to valves become brittle and crack over decades. This is nearly universal in player pianos more than 50 years old.

07

Tempo Control Won't Work

The regulator valve controlling airflow — and playback speed — has seized or lost its range. The piano plays at one fixed speed or varies wildly between songs.

08

Piano Is Out of Tune

The player system doesn't affect tuning, but pianos left unplayed for years drift badly. We handle tuning alongside any mechanical work so everything gets addressed together.

North Georgia's Piano Technician — Tuning, Repair & Restoration

Most piano technicians tune pianos. Very few understand the pneumatic engineering behind a player system — the pouches, valves, bellows, and tracker bars that translate a paper roll into music.

Piano Player Tech handles both. We tune acoustic pianos throughout North Georgia and specialize in player piano repair — all makes and eras, including Nordiska, Aeolian, Gulbransen, Autopiano, Ampico, and Steinway Duo-Art.

All service is in-home. Your piano doesn't need to move — we come to you, assess everything on-site, and give you a straight answer about what it needs.

Questions We Hear Most Often

Straight answers about player piano repair, pricing, and what to expect.

How much does it cost to repair a player piano?
Every player piano is different, so we don't quote costs sight-unseen. The diagnosis visit is $100 flat — at the end you'll know exactly what's wrong and what repair will cost. Repair work is billed at $125/hour with a written estimate before we start. Simple work like replacing a few tubes or cleaning the tracker bar might run 1–2 hours. A full pneumatic rebuild on a larger instrument can be 20+ hours spread across multiple visits. You'll always know the cost before we proceed.
Do you work on Nordiska player pianos?
Yes. Nordiska player pianos use a standard pneumatic system common to instruments of their era, and we're familiar with the wear patterns and sourcing challenges specific to these instruments. If you have a Nordiska that hasn't played in years — or one that plays poorly — a diagnosis visit is the right first step.
How do I know if my player piano needs service?
The most obvious sign is that it won't play, or plays very weakly. Other signs: individual notes that stick on and won't stop, notes that never trigger at all, a roll that won't advance or rewind, or a tempo that can't be adjusted. If the piano hasn't been serviced in more than 10 years, a preventive inspection is worthwhile even if it's playing — aged rubber and leather will fail eventually, and catching it early keeps the repair smaller.
Do you come to my home, or do I need to bring the piano somewhere?
We come to you. Moving a player piano is expensive, time-consuming, and puts the instrument at real risk. Most diagnostics and many repairs can be performed in place. For work that requires more extensive disassembly, we'll discuss the best approach — but we always start with an in-home visit and avoid moving the piano unless there's no other option.
How long does a full restoration take?
A diagnosis visit runs 1–2 hours. Minor repairs — cleaning the tracker bar, replacing a run of tubing, adjusting the tempo regulator — can often be completed the same day. A full pneumatic rebuild, which involves replacing all the pouches and recovering the main bellows, is a multi-visit project. Depending on parts availability and scheduling, expect several weeks from start to finish.
Is my old player piano worth repairing?
Usually yes, if the piano itself is structurally sound. A good-quality antique player piano in working condition is worth substantially more than the cost of restoring it — and these instruments are increasingly rare. We'll give you an honest read at the diagnosis visit, including our genuine assessment of whether restoration makes sense for your specific piano. We won't push you toward a repair that isn't worth it.
What brands do you work on?
We work on all makes of player pianos — Nordiska, Aeolian, Gulbransen, Autopiano, Ampico, Steinway Duo-Art, Standard, Pianola, and others. If you're not sure what brand you have, we can identify it at the diagnosis visit. Most player piano mechanisms from the same era share enough engineering that brand is rarely a barrier.
How often should a player piano be tuned?
Once or twice a year is the standard for any acoustic piano. If your piano has been sitting unplayed for several years, it will likely need two or three tunings spaced a few months apart to stabilize at proper pitch. We handle tuning alongside any player system work — so everything gets addressed in the same visit rather than requiring a separate appointment.
How do I schedule an appointment?
The best way is to call (706) 531-5161 or fill out the contact form at the bottom of this page. Tell us your location, what's going on with the piano, and when works for you — we'll get back to you to confirm a time. We schedule around your availability and will always give you a heads-up before the visit.
